Kenya is a country located in the eastern part of Africa. It is a country that contains savannah, highlands, lots of wildlife, and a very rich culture. The country has 4 cities, 63 towns, 66 townships, and 88 market centers. Here are some interesting facts about some of the cities and towns in Kenya.



The highest town in Kenya

Nyahururu town is the highest town in Kenya at an altitude of approximately 2360 meters above sea level. Nyahururu is home to Thomson falls (243ft) high which is on the Ewaso Narok river a tributary of the famous Ewaso Nyiro River. The town has a population of 36,450 and is an economic center shared by persons living in Nyandarua and Laikipia counties.


The oldest town in Kenya

Lamu is the oldest and continually inhabited town in Kenya and by extension in East Africa making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is believed to have been founded in 1370. The town is on Lamu Island archipelago. The town is home to rich Swahili culture and beautiful architecture influenced by the European, Arabic Indian, and Bantu cultures who interacted over the port over decades of the Swahili trade period.


The wildlife capital

Nairobi is the only city in the world that has a National game reserve within its boundaries on the southern side. Here you find wildlife such as lions, zebras, black rhinos, and natural flora existing in the backdrop of the busy city which is the capital of Kenya. The name Nairobi comes from the Maasai expression Enkare Nyorobi which means cool waters. Nairobi city is now famously known as the green city in the Sun.


Equatorial towns

The equator is an imaginary line of latitude running from east or west that divides the earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. It is the middle latitude and it is marked as 0 degrees.

Kenya is an equatorial country meaning that the equator passes through the country. The towns in Kenya that the equator crosses are Meru, Timboroa, Nyahururu, Nanyuki, and Maseno.


Newest City in "town"

Nakuru is the newest city in Kenya after being conferred city status on 1st December 2021 becoming the fourth city in Kenya after Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu cities. Nakuru city is the capital of Nakuru county and it is home to great tourist attractions such as Lake Nakuru National park which is famous for the presence of flamingos in Lake Nakuru. Another famous attraction is the Menengai crater, the second-largest surviving volcanic crater in the world.
